The Eternal City, 1934-37, oil on board

Peter Blume, 1906-1992, American.  MOMA, NY

The artist was in Rome in 1932.  Benito Mussolini (1883-1945, Italian), popping up frighteningly everywhere as though a jack-in-the-box has imposed a threatening dominance over everyone including a beggar woman scrambling in the broken marble.  A broken, forlorn Christ, bejeweled, remains locked in a shrine.  In the distance, threatening officers lie in wait for people streaming towards the Roman Forum.

  1. Yes. A perfect parallel to the scene in the United States today.
    Well found.
