The Painted Lady  (Cynthia Vanessa Virginiensis: North American species) at table on a spike gayfeather.  Mt. Cuba, Hockessin, DE every Summer. 

 

When she flies, it is all flashing black, and red-gold on the upper side of her wings. With white highlights.

 

It is barely surprising that so fabulous a creature is found on every continent (except Antarctica and South America). 

The trade winds have loved her for millenia.
