Eileen Goodman, American born 1937
Eileen Goodman defines the challenges and surprises of working with watercolours – an unforgiving because difficult-to-correct medium – as accidents and the control of accidents; and the need for control. This is because the pigment moves on the paper and needs to be controlled, contained and encouraged into the shapes of the artist’s intent.

Watercolour is always transparent.
The light is either the bare paper or a very thin wash of pigment.
Poppies, 1987, watercolour
Eileen Goodman, American born 1937
Shadows are built up in a series of transparent washes.
Eileen Goodman is much admired for her shadows. “Shadows,” she says “define form; objects emerge and dissolve…” Viewers bring their own emotional or psychological interpretation to such shadows, she adds.
