Cohosh, bugbane, fairy candles (Actaea acerina) bloom in late summer and early autumn in an oasis in the Azalea Woods.
An Asian variety of the plant.
Their cousins (Actaea racemosa), planted not in an oasis but scattered in long ribbons among the bushes in these same woods
bloomed in June and early July; they have faded and been dead-headed.
I go out in the early morning sun to see these autumnals: as modest a plant as the magnificent Kurume azalea are showy.
Snow, I think. Snow is coming.
Tridents, spears glittering.
