Resurrection Blessing: Robert Campin c. 1430

Christ and the Virgin

Christ and the Virgin

c. 1430-1435, oil and gold on woodpanel

Robert Campin, also called The Master of Flémalle, Netherlandish, active Tournai, first documented 1406-1444

The inward and guarded expressions on both faces are of suffering or its memory.

Christ’s left hand bends over the frame to reach into the viewer’s intimate space. His brooch reflects a window.

The fingers of Christ’s right hand are raised in empathy with the suffering which is everywhere and never-ending.

In blessing and solace.
