Winterthur, Delaware is the legacy of Henry Francis du Pont and Mt. Cuba in Hockessin, Delaware of the Lammot du Pont Copelands
Into the Azalea woods at Winterthur in mid-June,
the flowers of hardy Kurume azalea bushes have faded;
Rhododendrons persist but the tree rhododendrons are almost done
At their feet for the briefest time, small oases of Turk’s Cap lilies:
martagon lilies (Eurasia) at Winterthur
and the native lily, Lilium Superbum, at both Winterthur and Mt. Cuba, Delaware.
They are perennials and flower very briefly in June and July.
which the eye picks up first in small oases of pale pink, grey-pink and grey purple, gold, bronze.

these lilies inspire me a great nostalgia for those who grow in my mountains.
I’m probably not going to see them again.
Where are those mountains, Louis? I hope you see them again. These are among my favourite lilies for their ethereal colours. Sarah
