Composition, 1915, oil on canvas.  Henri Matisse, 1869-1954, French.  MOMA, NY

The artist said that this painting is of a view from his window.  It includes the window curtain, lined with yellow; and a blue awning over the front door.

According to the museum, the large mass of yellow is the vibration the artist experienced with the contrast between green trees and blue skies.  This is an abstract painting of a reality.

MOMA notes that this is a masterpiece of the drip method of painting.  The canvas was placed on the floor to be worked.

The artist said:  “On the floor I feel more at ease. I feel nearer, more a part of the painting since this way I can work around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting.”

An immense painting of the energy and equilibrium of his country mid-way through her century by a man born in Cody, Wyoming.
