Fish Market, 1568, oil on Baltic oak, Joachim Beuckelaer, Netherlandish, 1533-1575.  Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY

Most of the paintings in this post are ‘genre’ paintings of a type which developed in Holland in the seventeenth century.  This painting, the museum notes, is the earliest of this type and preceded the form by a half-century.

The museum also notes that the subtext of this painting, which does not contain any obvious religious motif, is to warn against the excesses of the pleasures of the flesh.  The housewife, out shopping for fish with her vessel to receive them, crosses her hands over the mouth of her vessel against the temptation of succulent salmon.
