GEORGE A. WEYMOUTH: the eye of a realist

 George A. (Frolic) Weymouth, 1936-2016, American

George A. Weymouth, affectionately called ‘Frolic’ by friends, was an exceptionally fortunate man.

A member of the American du Pont family who settled in 1802 on the Brandywine River outside Wilmington, Delaware; and whose philanthropic bequests to the nation are beyond quantifying;

a friend of the Pennsylvanian Wyeth family of artists; a student of Andrew Wyeth and a close friend of his son, Jamie Wyeth, both of them among the foremost realists and figurative painters of the US in the last 80 years;

A man who lived in magnificent country in south-east Pennsylvania not far from its border with Delaware, which, with two friends,

he began conserving in 1947: the Brandywine Conservancy: an effort which has now preserved 73,000 acres of Pennsylvanian land; a bequest which is as valuable to my life as any of the  sophisticated, curated bequests of the family;

A skilled equestrian and practitioner of four-in-hand carriage driving;

A founding member of the Brandywine River Museum which showcases the work of the Wyeths and of (north) American artists, primarily realists ;

and who served the arts nationally…………

was also himself a man of no small artistic skill and practice.  He described himself as a realist and said that it is difficult to improve on a reality which is itself perfect.

From an exhibition at the Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania in 2018, here is some of his work.
